Daughters of Mary and Joseph...

Founded in Belgium in 1817, the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph (the DMJs) began their work with poor girls, starving because of famine, by providing basic education and employment in their lace-making school in Flanders.

The Sisters first came to England in 1869 and settled in Croydon. They opened Coloma Convent School, which still flourishes today as a girls comprehensive school, of which the Sisters are Trustees.  The Congregation now has ten communities throughout the UK and 200 sisters worldwide. This enables it to retain its small and friendly character. Adaptability in responding to today’s needs is the Sisters’ only rule and they carry it out with enthusiasm, joy and compassion. The DMJs have always worked closely with lay people. Coloma Court exemplifies the fruit of this close co-operation.

A Pastoral Care Team, led by two DMJ Sisters, ensures that pastoral care and support is available for residents, their families and the staff. There is a large Chapel within the Home.  Mass is celebrated regularly and services are also held for other denominations.  Residents, their visitors and staff are all welcome to attend services.
